AMSTERDAM - Amsterdam Mayor Job Cohen has announced that he will take part in the Gay Pride boat parade - the annual gay pride boat parade through the city's canals.
Mayor Cohen will be the first mayor to take part in the event.
The move is intended to emphasise that each and any form of intolerance or violence against homosexuals is unacceptable.
Cohen will meet members of a gay Turkish organisation and attend a debate on the emancipation of North African gays and lesbians.
The 2008 Canal pride, which is scheduled to be held on 2 August, will feature a city council boat, in addition to a government boat carrying Education Minister Ronald Plasterk.
In a written statement, the Amsterdam council says: "There is proof of countermovements, varying from subtle discrimination in the workplace to open violence against homosexuals. This is unacceptable.
