ROME - A four-year-old French girl whose father repeatedly beat her head against a marble monument in Rome is out of danger after emerging from a four-day coma, doctors told Italian TV Thursday.

"Her condition has improved, she has regained consciousness, her eyes have opened and she is breathing naturally," Fransesca Stoppa told Sky24. "Her life is no longer endangered, although the next 36 hours will still be crucial."

The girl was admitted Saturday after her father smashed her head against the base of the Vittoriano monument in Piazza Venezia before being restrained by passers-by, according to police.

The child's mother visited her in hospital Monday. She had been in Turkey at the time of the incident and had not even been aware that her partner and daughter had travelled to Italy from Paris.

Rome prosecutors applied Monday to upgrade the charges against the father from serious wounding to attempted homicide.

A senior officer with the carabinieri told AFP the child's mother had confirmed the father had a history of psychiatric problems.
